The Significance of the Insignificant

On a bootleg concert CD recorded in Kansas City in 2001, Don Chaffer talked about the small things in life. The little things that do not really matter much in the grand scheme of things. These insignificant things, as small as they may be, are special, they are infinitely human--and they are what make life...well, life. They make life worth living. I contend that the small things are really not so small, they are bigger than the worlds atrocities, bigger than that relationship that has ruined your week, bigger than the financial crisis which will be the eventual cause of a few gray hairs.

The smell of a freshly finished thunderstorm. The warmth of a thick blanket on a bitterly cold night. The last sip of tea. Mom’s homemade green chile. A good conversation with a good friend. The feeling you have right after you have finished a homework assignment that has been hanging over your head for weeks. Matt Holiday sliding head-first into the dirt to clinch a playoff spot. Trying your new favorite food for the very first time. The power of a smile. The perfect song playing at the perfect time. Seeing Eternity in the eyes of a complete stranger. Homemade Nepali chai. The smell/look of freshly cut grass. The way your old, worn out, dirty baseball cap fits you just right. The sound that snow makes when you walk on it.

To me, these are the types of things that make life. They are simply, humbly, completely and infinitely human. God redeemed humanity, this much is true. But it is amazing to think that God felt that there was something about humankind worth saving.

Whoever it is that is reading this, tell me, what are some of the small things that sweeten your life?
